Filming content in your own shop: a phone, a window, ten minutes

The reason most small businesses don’t film content isn’t equipment or confidence. It’s that filming feels like an event you have to schedule. It isn’t — it’s ten minutes, in the space you already work in, with the phone in your pocket.

The setup

  1. Find your window. Stand so daylight falls on the subject, not behind it. One window is better lighting than most ring lights.
  2. Brace the phone. Lean it against something solid or use any cheap tripod. Handheld wobble is the difference between “small business” and “unfinished”.
  3. Film in short takes. Ten to fifteen seconds each. Short clips are easier to shoot, easier to cut, and easier to reuse.
  4. Get three angles of one thing. Wide, close, and hands working. Three angles of a single job is a finished post.
  5. Stop at ten minutes. A limit is what makes this repeatable.

What to film

The work you were doing anyway. Preparation, the middle of a job, the finished result, the tidy-up. Nobody needs a script — the appeal is watching something be done properly by someone who knows how.

If you’re stuck, film the answer to the last question a customer asked you. It’s useful, it’s specific, and it costs you nothing to think of.

Key takeaway

Daylight, a braced phone, short takes, ten minutes. Film the work you already do and you’ll never run out of things to post.

Editing, briefly

Trim the dead air at the start and end of every clip, put the most interesting second first, and add text on screen for the people watching without sound — which is most of them. That’s the whole edit. Anything more elaborate is a hobby, not a requirement.

Build the habit, not the archive

The goal isn’t a library of perfect footage. It’s a habit: one ten-minute filming session a week, in the space you already stand in, capturing work you were doing anyway. Businesses that manage that never have to ask what to post.

If filming is fine but everything after it isn’t, that’s the part I take over in a social media system — you capture, I handle the rest.
